Meet Jennifer Lackey Moore - Jeweler
Lexington jeweler Jennifer
Lackey Moore creates stunning jewelry beginning with her own designs.
She starts
by cutting the glass, crushing it, layering it, and fusing it in a kiln up to
1550 degrees. She then works it on a ring saw, grinder, and sander to shape the
glass before firing it again. Layering more glass between firings adds the
amazing depth you can see in each piece. Once
a piece has cooled from its final firing, Jennifer custom fits a bezel with
sterling silver and makes the findings for it. Then she finishes it (solders,
pickles, tumbles, files, and polishes), sets the stone in the bezel and ends with a final
polish.
In her own words:
"Coming
from a family with many artists I have always appreciated and enjoyed art. I
was taken to arts fairs as a child and saw varied forms of glass, jewelry and
other art. I knew then that I wanted to work with jewelry and glass. I started
making jewelry out of found objects in high school and then in 1994 my mother
gave me her first stained glass equipment. After taking a class I began making
stained glass. Soon after that I bought my first kiln and starting fusing glass
and making dichroic jewelry.
I later learned silversmithing, and have
incorporated silverwork with my fused glass. The combination allows for each
piece to be unique.
I eventually began showing my work in the same art fairs that I
had been going to most of my life. I love participating in the fairs
and enjoy all of the people that I encounter at them."
 Jennifer
uses dichroic glass in most of her work. Dichroic glass is the shiny "special"
glass used in most fused, slumped, lamp-worked, or blown pieces. Dichroic
glass, developed by NASA, has many microscopic thin layers of metal oxides that
are vacuum deposited onto the glass. Using the refraction index of the material
causes the light rays to bend in wonderful, colorful play. The colors may vary
each time it is fused, or with each color it is fused with, making every piece
one-of-a-kind.
"My
love for glass began over 25 years ago with family and art fairs," Jennifer
says. "The beautiful red glass that my grandmother had in her house was like
nothing else. She had this one paperweight in particular that was just
fascinating and as a child I was convinced there were fish in it. I looked at
those pieces every time I was there and I still love looking at them. I now
have that paperweight where I can see it every day."
Jennifer
is a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen. Her beautiful jewelry is sold in fine galleries and shops in Lexington, Louisville, and Berea, as well as at juried art fairs.
