Meet Donna Gillstrap McGregor - Mosaic Artist
There's nothing I can say about Donna McGregor that could
introduce her better than her own artist statement. I can only say that I am
very much looking forward to meeting her in person at the festival.
In her own words:
"We live in a world of so-called perfection - everything has to be perfect. However, I couldn't seem to find anything that was perfect. I finally gave up and started appreciating all the imperfections in life.
Life and just being able to take a breath each day has been my inspiration in my art the last few years. I look at the beauty in all the imperfections around me. It's the imperfect layers of stone in a cliff on a rural Kentucky road, it's the way a flower creeps out between the layers and blooms, it's the way water in a creek goes around a large rock in order to flow down the crooked creek, it's the way leaves and branches turn and grow, it's all the imperfections in nature that become absolutely beautiful and perfect to me.
I hope that others will see the beauty in my imperfect art as I do in the natural beauty around me.
For the last couple of years I have had a great interest in mosaics. I started out doing a small sample board for a client's pool house and with that he asked me to do a large 15' x 10 ½' mural.
As a hands-on designer, the opportunity to create the mural was exciting, as well as intimidating on such a large scale.
I was hooked, and have continued working with various stones, smalti and concrete to create mosaic pieces.
For approximately 10 years I owned a successful custom design stage-wear business in the NY / NJ area. After a life changing car wreck left me unable to continue in the stage-wear business, I moved back to Kentucky and went back to Interior Design.
Creating mosaic art pieces, sculptures, murals and functional concrete & mosaic furniture has given me an opportunity to fill a hole inside me; and best of all, create a smile for others."
On June 21st, you'll find Donna in Booth #4 at Francisco's Farm Arts Festival.
