Meet
Metalsmith - Lloyd Hughes
When I saw
the first image Lloyd submitted to us I thought,
"Beautiful!
Did he make the
lamp or the table?"
The
answer was
"both".
Lloyd
Hughes is a 4th
generation metalsmith who has been perfecting his craft
for over 30 years. His work includes architectural
commissions as well as furniture and
sculpture.
In his own words -
"Some of my earliest memories are of hanging around my
grandfather's steel fabrication shop. I was fascinated
with the sights, sounds and smells but didn't plan on
following in his footsteps. I was drawn back into it
when an older brother asked me to join him at a firm
specializing in architectural
ironwork."

Lloyd's architectural commission work can be seen at
the Transylvania University soccer/softball complex and
the SAE Fraternity house at UK. He has completed
significant projects out of state, including
installations at a private residence in south Florida
that took several years to complete. The project
included doors, gates and bronze tables along with many
other items. A much smaller project
for a Kentucky horse farm led to him creating bronze
components for a farm in Japan.
His long time
involvement with the National Ornamental &
Miscellaneous Metals Association led to his
being asked to appear in a series of instructional
videos. In them he covers topics concerning design,
fabrication and finishes for architectural metalwork,
from railings to garden gates.
The proceeds from
the sale of these videos benefit NOMMA's Education
Foundation. Lloyd also serves on the Board of Trustees
of the National Metal Museum in Memphis,
TN.
His studio in
Lexington consists of 1,500 sq feet of workspace and
1,000 sq feet of retail space he calls the Eclectic
Hammer Gallery. It is a mixture of artwork and home
accessories such as tables, lighting, mirrors, etc. that
he has designed and crafted. He has worked alone for
twenty years, so from start to finish the work is his
own.

Come and meet Lloyd at Francisco's Farm Arts
Festival in June.
Thanks for reading! Watch for next
week's newsletter to meet another great artist.
