Meet
Ceramic Artist - Cynthia
Carr
You may
have seen Cynthia over the years at one of a dozen
juried art fairs in Kentucky, or perhaps found her work
in galleries from Pennsylvania to Florida.
One of the comments I hear from
some art fair visitors is that they don't return to the
same fairs each year because they tire of seeing the
same artists. One of the things that most impresses me
about Cynthia Carr is that every time I see her I am
seeing 'a new artist'.
She epitomizes creativity
and innovation, constantly working on new forms and new
combinations of forms. In recent years she has expanded
her artistic expression into mixed media, combining
metal and wood with her distinctive clay styles to
create lighting fixtures (wonderful chandeliers and
lamps), beautiful garden totems, and more.

Cynthia's
art career spans more than thirty-five years, beginning
with classes at Wayne State University in Detroit. She
taught ceramics in 1972 in Lakewood, Ohio and earned her
B.F.A. at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1973, then
her M.F.A. in ceramics at Tulane University in 1975.
She built
her first kiln in Abita Springs, Louisiana and taught
students there in wheel-thrown pottery. In the 1980's
she moved to Harrodsburg, Kentucky, built a
45-cubic-foot propane kiln, and established Crosswinds
Pottery. There she mixes her own clay body and glazes,
and shares her knowledge and skills with several
apprentices.
I love her
work and always look forward to seeing her latest
designs - in fact I've been squirreling away my
FarmBucks (my art savings bonds) this year in hopes of
purchasing one of her lamps at the Festival in

A long-term veteran of the
Kentucky Craft Marketing Program, Cynthia was selected
as a participant in the 'Platinum 10' group, a product
development pilot project. One result was an ad
showcasing the group's collaborative effort to create a
cohesive body of work that reflected current design
trends. The ad appeared in the Spring Issue of Niche
magazine 2007 - the hanging lamp is Cynthia's.
Besides
concentrating on her own art, Cynthia also serves as a
consultant for the Kentucky Peer Advisory Network in the
areas of product evaluation and development and business
planning. She is truly one of Kentucky's craft business
success stories, blending her own career with a generous
outreach to the next generation of artists.
Thanks for
reading!
Watch for
next week's newsletter and meet another great
artist.
